Yang Xiu devises a plan to save Zi Jian and tells Zi Jian to push the fault of trespassing the Sima gates onto Sima Lang. Although Zi Jian has an honest character, he lies to Cao Cao that it was Sima Lang's doing. Sima Lang screems for justice, and Cao Cao knows what is going on. Irregardless, he has Sima Lang imprisoned.

Sima Yi runs around desperately looking for a way to save his brother. The first person he goes to is Zi Huan. However, Zi Huan sees this as a golden opportunity to rid of Zi Jian and confirm his status as a successor. He denies Sima Yi's request. On Cao Cao's side, him and his wife knows Zi Huan is the only one to speak for Zi Jian but knows he will not do so. Cao Cao already saw the situations 10 steps ahead and awaits for Xun Yi to be involved.

Sima Yi realizes that Xiao Shi House puts a spy on all important officials and keeps a secret track of everyone's whereabouts. He ask Ji Bu to steal the record of Ding Yi blackmailing Minister Cui. After retrieving the records, Sima Yi's father yells at him for such a reckless strategy because it will anger Cao Cao and make him destroy Sima family in the future for destroying one of his most trusted advisor (Minister Cui). The father instructs Sima Yi to go find Xun Yi.

At Xun Yi's house, Sima Yi explained the situation and shows him the records of Ding Yi's blackmail. Xun Yi laughs and says this is awful as it will put Cao Cao in a situation to kill his beloved son, destroy the great Minister Cui and his family, and kill the person that help him steal the records. Xun Yi agrees to help Sima Yi, and will tell him what to do the next morning.

Xun Yi finally meets with Cao Cao, and they discuss about their values and roles. Xun Yi explains that he is disappointed in the events today. He swore allegiance to the Han dynasty and believed Cao Cao will strengthen Han Dynasty and put down the turmoil and bring peace to the civilians. Instead, Cao Cao started creating his own nation and crowned himself King of Wei. Xun Yi is a Han Dynasty devotee and will only serve with the purpose of protecting Han dynasty. After the meeting, Cao Cao is saddened and gets irritated that people kept saying where he is wrong today, tomorrow, and many other days. Which day will he finally be correct?

They are to identify anything suspicious within the documents.

Yang Xiu discovers something alarming and reports to Cao Cao. The scroll was written in Zi Huan's handwriting, and it complained about Cao Cao's wrongdoing in disposing eldest son. Cao Cao treats this as a tactic in recruiting support against his authority. Zi Huan declares he did not write this, and is to be imprisoned for an investigation. Before he is dragged away, he ask his father "the citizens can tell their injustice at courts, officials can tell their injustice to the king, who can this son tell his injustice to?" Cao Cao, at first assigns Si Fa official to handle the case and is quickly persuaded by Yang Xiu to allow Ding Yi (who hates Zi Huan) to sit as the judge.

Guo Zhao tells Sima Yi that Zi Huan has been imprisoned. Sima Yi tells them if they ever want to send them a message, it's better to have Ji Bu sent to their house instead of them coming personally. It's too risky! Sima Yi's father says that Sima Yi cannot help! It's regarding treason and Ding Yi was appointed to the case. Sima Yi, shocked, runs to act immediately.

Ding Yi press Zi Huan to confess and will use aggressive means to force a confession out of Zi Huan starting with 20 large wooden hits. A scholar speaks with his father is understanding a word. The father says it took Cao Cao 30 km of horseback riding to get it and it took 4 minutes for Yang Xiu to get it. The scholar says then he would rather confess he understands it within 40 km. Anyone smart will not try to beat Cao Cao. You need to use the strategy of not fighting for to fight for it. 3 people who uses this strategy is Xun Yi, his father, and Sima Yi. Just then, Sima Yi arrives

Sima Yi explains to his father that he needs to save Zi Huan in order to save his brother, Sima Lang. Sima Yi begs Cao Cao to see Zi Huan as this is a serious affair concerning the fate of Wei. He takes Zi Huan's bloody clothes to show Cao Cao's wife that Ding Yi is abusing Zi Huan. He ask for the wife's help.

Two official, Yuang Cheng (Zhong Si Qian) and Sima Yi's father, discusses about who forged the letter. Yuan Cheng says that it must be someone who interacts regularly with Xun Yi and Zi Huan. It might not actually be Yang Xiu because he has bad relationship with Xun Yi and would not be able to easily get into Xun Yi's work room. Sima Yi's father beg Yuan Cheng to help.

Zhong Si Qian is now assigned to Cao Pi's case to start investigating about the scroll. Cao Pi gives a speech to be redirected to Cao Cao. He says the scroll content does not reflect anything he thinks and is full of words of treason. Cao Pi sees the work of his father as saving the country. If it wasn't for Cao Cao, then it would be in another chaos. Yes, the dynasty has changed, but it's based on the situation. If it wasn't for this, then it will be much worse. His father did not lust just after merely a throne.

Zhong Si Qian tells Cao Cao that he will be taking the scroll and comparing it with the works of all officials.

Sima Yi leads a bunch of officials to wait outside for the immediate findings of Zhong Si Qian. Zhong Si qian is stunned as he did not even start working and tells Sima Yi that he is forcing him. Sima Yi says he's afraid someone else will be forcing Zhong Si Qian. Xun Jun Shi (military strategist title) arrives to await for his findings as well because he wants to clear the name of Xun family.

Shu Da and Sima Yi talk about the events during the day. Shu Da says Sima Yi's action is to place pressure against Cao Cao. Sima Yi says he has to do it in order to save Zi Huan

Zi Jian apologizes to Cao Cao, and admits that he is the one who trespassed Sima gates. Cao Cao is happy that he is honest; however, he is there to ask him about his brother's case. Cao Cao ask for absolute honesty. Is the scroll related to you or Yang Xiu? Zi Jian says he doesn't know and it is definitely not him nor Yang Xiu. Cao Cao wants Zi Jian to fight for the successor as Confusion said that rulers background must a benevolent integrity.

Zhong Qi Qian discovers something and shows his son. A soldier reports back to Cao Cao that people from Zhong Zi Qian's house has been dispatched to Minister Cui's house and Minister Cui Ran has gone to Da Li Si (equal to Supreme Court). Cao Cao gives instruction to the soldier to close off Da Li Si and forbid communication between Da Li Si and anyone else. Sima Yi finds out Cui Ran is at Da Li Si and runs back to find Xun Jun Shi still standing there.

Zhong Si Qian comes out and reads Cui Ran's statement regarding the case. Cui Ran admits it was his doing as ordered by Zi Jian and Yang Xiu. He forged a scroll by Zi Huan and hid it in Xun Yi's study room. Xun Jun Shi goes and complete his side of the responsibilities needed to save Zi Huan. The soldiers arrive and forbid Zhong Si Qian interacting with anyone. However, it's too late

Xun Jun Shi meets with Cao Cao and the soldiers report that Zhong Si Qian had already revealed the truth to everyone before he arrived. Xun Jun Shi request for a fair trial of Zi Huan.

Cao Cao has a headache as Cui Ran confessed without even being oppressed. He's there to hurt his son-in-law, Zi Jian. They did this for their devotion to Han dynasty and not letting Cao Cao do whatever he wants.

Yang Xiu and Ding Yi understand what had happened. Their enemies and joined together and sacrificed the lives of 2 powerful political figures to get rid of Zi Jian's powers and people. Yang Xiu enters the palace to figure out what to do

Yang Xiu and Zi Jian meets with Cao Cao, and Cao Cao is flustered at the mess they caused. Everyone is writing to have them killed. They ask for a way to investigate and push Cui Ran's statement back. Cao Cao says Cui Ran is asking for his own death. Nothing will work. Yang Xiu should focus on defending himself.

Sima Yi tells Zi Huan it was Cui Ran who forged the scroll, and doesn't accompanies Zi Huan to see Cao Cao as Cao Cao is furious at the moment especially at Sima Yi's strategy. Sima Yi stays behind to see Minister Cui. Zhong Si Qian ask whether they can save Minister Cui. Sima Yi says people who wants to live can be saved. People who is asking for death cannot be saved.

Minister Cui talks to Sima Yi. Minister Cui that he had a pact with Xun Yi to sacrifice their lives to their principle of having the eldest as the successor if Cao Cao insist on going his way. Minister Cui says he helped because he believed in their abilities to save the nation and his impact is limited.

Cao Cao holds a meeting to announce the end of the case. He frees Zi Huan and have Ding Yi killed. He ask if Zi Huan is satisfied and ask if all the officials are satisfied. Cao Pi meets with Cao Cao and ask him if it was Cao Pi that schemed Cao Zhi, what will be Cao Pi's punishment? Cao Cao angered pulls out a sword and ask if they want to kill each other already before his death. Cao Pi says he will say it for Cao Cao. If he was the one to scheme against Zi Jian, Cao Cao will have him killed. Even if he doesn't have him killed, Yang Xiu and Ding Yi will find a way to kill him. However, he will not kill Zi Jian. He put his life in the hands of his father when he entered the jail cells because he believe his father will be just.

Sima Yi takes the day off to play with his son. Cao Cao enters his palace halls where the officials are awaiting. He notices Xun Yi is not there and his official says he has been sick. (Another famous event in history) Cao Cao writes the word 活 (meaning alive) on a door, and ask for the meaning of his intent. Yang Xiu speaks and says you are telling us this door is too wide. doors + 活 becomes the word 阔. The brackets surrounding the word alive means doors. Cao Pi ask Cao Cao to have Zi Jian return for a visit and Cao Cao is happy.

Xun Yi no longer wants to serve Cao Cao and has been pretending to be sick. He is in doubt what the purpose of his life the past 20 years.

Sima Yi finds out that Cao Pi had requested Zi Jian's return and goes to visit Cao Pi in bliss. The father warns Sima Yi that Yang Xiu is using his brother like a hostage against Cao Pi from winning. Cao Pi needs to win in order to save the elder brother.

Cui Shen tells his uncle that it was Cao Zhi who trespassed. Ding Yi has a letter that Cui Shen has sent out to his relative complaining about certain political matters. If this matter is heard by Cao Cao, he will probably do something harmful to Cui Shen. Minister Cui will have to comply and push the fault of trespassing Si Ma gates to Sima Lang.

Guo Zhao tells this incident to Sima Yi the next day, and he immediately rushes to Cao Pi to stop him from going hunting again. The minister speech indicates that he sees Cao Pi as the future successor, and he is a trusted neutral advisor in Cao Cao's government. Cao Pi burns all his hunting gears and decides to focus on his duties.

Sima Yi's wife worries about the family's safety for helping Zi Huan. Sima Yi assures her. Later, Zi Huan celebrates the situation with Ji Bu has been successfully ended. Sima Yi apologizes to the general for having to threaten him with a sword at his head. He punish himself with 3 cups of wine, but the general takes out 2 jugs for the punishment. Not only, he makes it a blood wine and warns Sima Yi to never do anything against Zi Huan.

There's no saving Sima Yi this time, and he gets extremely drunk and sits down. Juas at this moment, he sees Lady Zhen enter the room and immediately puts his head down in respect to her status. Everyone does the same but some kept their heads up to look at the wife's beauty. The servant has a disgusted look.

Everyone whose head was up is punished. Though the mother was just displaying a show to yell at the son, Cao Cao saw everything as he had a mirror on the bed. Zi Huan is upset that his loyal officials has been punished.

Thoughts

After watching to episode 10, I remembered another make of the story and what happened. The title was called Where the Legend Begins (Luo Shen) by TVB production.



This story was about Lady Zhen, who was played by Ada Choi. I thought she was very pretty in this drama. In this drama, she liked Zi Jian and you can really feel their chemistry. She was forced to marry Zi Huan because Zi Huan liked her and schemed to get her. Later her best friend/maid was a girl she saved from a period of famine. She became the 2nd wife of Zi Huan and became known as Guo Zhao. Lady Zhen would become empress, and then sentenced to death due to Guo Zhao schemes.

There's a famous scene where Zi Huan became king and threatened to kill Zi Jian if he cannot recite a poem in 7 steps. Zi Jian lost his poetry skills after he lost Lady Zhen. In order to help him recover his poetry skills within 7 steps, she smiles to him as inspiration. Chinese poetry is about describing objects, feelings, motions, etc.

They leave to somewhere else.

Sima Yi ask "Why does Minister Cao assign the responsibility of catching Ji Bu to you? Why did he give you such a short time?" Ji Bu belongs to Xiao Shi house which Zi Huan is in charge of, and wants to use this incident to weaken my power. Sima Yi "Why does he want to do that?" Zi Huan says it's because he is thinking of making Zi Jian the heir. "Why does Minister Cao feels like he has to do this?" Because I'm the eldest son, and that I am more looked up to among the officials. Sima Yi explains so if you catch Ji Bu, you are going against his will and declaring war against Cao Cao and Zi Jian. You will become a bad person in many people's eyes and if you error again, people will despise you even more.

If Zi Huan cannot find Ji Bu, he's going to make Sima Yi suffer as well, AND, he knows Ji Bu has good relations with Sima Yi's wife.

Sima Yi tells Ji Bu not to return to Minister Cao because the minister is not looking to punish him but someone else. If he returns now, it will be against the minister wish. Sima Yi houses Ji Bu and wonders what his relationship with his wife is. His wife brings him a bowl of vinegar (in Chinese culture, vinegar is associated with being jealous). Sima Yi eats the bowl and finds its lily bulb/ lotus seed soup.

Thoughts

In real history, it was said that Cao Pi (Zi Huan) was the actual one was mesmerized by Lady Zhen's appearance. Here, it is Cao Zhi (Zi Jian).

Sima Yi hears news of Cao Cao's victory. He burned the enemies food storage which was crucial for his small army to win against a large army. His success means trouble for Sima Yi as talents must be used by Cao Cao or be eliminated. He waits for the arrival of an important guest.

Sima Yi shocks everyone by standing up and greeting Cao Pi. Cao Pi ask Sima Yi for his service one last time as Sima Yi sees through Cao Pi and understands his desires. He tells Sima Yi, he wants to be shizi (almost like crown prince except his father is not the king). Sima Yi sees Minister Cao and Minister Cao says he hears Sima Yi looks like an eagle suspiciously looking back. He appoints him the position of horse caretaker and throws stones on the ground to see if Sima Yi actually looks like what the rumor says, and he does!

Minister Cao plays with his son and wants to give him the royal candy gifts from the morning. The eunuch tells him that Yang Xiu, and Minister Cao is annoyed. He now has no reason to hold back from letting Yang Xiu live. He visits his son, Zi Jian, and finds Yang Xiu distributing the candies. Zi Jian ask isn't it inappropriate to take without asking? Yang Xiu says the candy is named "A Box of Cookies". In chinese character, if you isolate every stroke of the first 2 characters, it becomes each person have one cookie. See below

Many strategies stories bring lots of moralities and topics for discussion. A great question I would like to ponder about is if someone is smart and manipulative but doesn't harm you and only make you do things, would you still be willing to friend that someone?

If someone can bring peace to the nation, but is greedy and wants to depose the current government, would you help or not help?

If someone pretended to be genuine to gain your trust, but ultimately use you for the positive in achieving a goal, how would you feel? What if you knew he was pretending to be genuine, would you still allow it?

Is Cao Cao a good father or a bad father?

At this point, who does Cao Cao favor: Zi huan or Zi Jian?

Yang Xiu actor is not bad. He manage to capture the character of someone I don't like but understand his position. He also allows me to see that he is capable as well. His voice and attitude is on point.

#1 - during chaotic times, you need to use people based on talent and not morals. Yang Xiu is exceptionally smart and rare.

#2 - Yang Xiu can suppress internal opposition because he is the son of Yang Biao, the leader of Han loyal officials. With Yang Xiu at Cao Cao's side, Han Loyal officials will fear Yang Biao's betrayal and reduce contact with him. Yang Biao will also not be as daring with his son's life at Cao Cao's mercy.

#3 - Yang Xiu is also Yuan Shao's nephew, which makes him the best person to communicate with Yuan Shao.

In the past, Cao Cao became friends with Xun Yu because Xun Yu has a powerful family who can supply him many talented people to work under him. Cao Cao has the situation under control with one pawn, Yang Xiu. Zi Huan, who still does not like Yang Xiu, suggested to have Sima Yi appointed as well to keep Yang Xiu's greed at limit so he does not get too out of hand. Cao Cao agrees.

Angered at his unwillingness to serve, Zi Huan leaves.

They spread rumor that Sima Yi is a communicating with Yuan Shao, and his older brother pushes Sima Yi to do something about the rumor. Sima Yi is brought to Minister Cao, and they verified that his leg bones are broken and perhaps permanently disabled. They are wandering whether Sima Yi will ever be of use to them. Cao Cao do not wish to bear the name of killing a disabled innocent scholar. They will wait for whenever Sima Yi is ready.

He makes Xun Yu go monitor the execution (against his will for harmony) and Yang Xiu (wants to make sure Sima Fang dies) ask to go monitor as well. Zi Huan speaks for Sima family in postponing the execution and angers his father.

Xun Yun tells Yang Xiu that the Sima Fang still has not sign his criminal confession. He needs it to proceed with the execution and ask Yang Xiu to forge it. He does so thinking it is weird. Sima Yi's wife attempted to save her father in law by force but failed.

Sima Fang comes last minute and stall the execution. With Xun Yu and Zi Huan on Sima Fang's side, he's allowed to speak as he found new evidence to prove his father's innocence. The evidence is the signature on Sima Fang's confession. It is forged by Yang Xiu and Xun Yu confirms it publicly. Turns, Sima Yi and Xun Yu has developed a plan to scheme agains Yang Xiu. The plan requires to fake Sima Yi's death. The signature proves that this letter can possibly be forged especially because Yang Xiu doesn't like Sima Family and refused the wedding. In the midst of family arguing, Yang Xiu reveals that the golden cup belongs to Sima's family. Minister Cao's official never told anyone where exactly in detail where he found the letter. Innocence is proven, and the three are jailed for further investigation

Xun Yu visits Yang Xiu to see what he needs to say. Xun Yu selected Sima Yi because Yang Xiu's character is not righteous and will not bring the peace Xun Yu is looking for. Yang Xiu states some key facts. He understand that Cao Cao spared him and his father because he is willing to obey Cao Cao over the king. He thinks the world is in a mess and Cao Cao can bring peace to the world.

Sima Fang is released, and Sima Family reunites. Xun Yu explains to Minister Cao how the events came about, and Minister Cao says don't worry as he has absolute trust in Xun Yu. Xun Yu feels guilty and thinks highly of Cao's character. His release of Sima Fang and Yang Xiu was to make Xun Yu be on the same boat as him. Now that he spare all the lives of the people on the list, their next generation all will think highly of Minister Cao and pledge their allegiance officially ending the political internal chaos. Minister Cao likes Sima Yi, Yang Xiu, and Feng Xiao.

Guo Zhao continues and says it's more about Yang Xiu's selfish and will create problems for Cao Cao and his family eventually. They should not give someone like him a chance for chaos. The commander says he's the most unloved by his father among his 2 brothers. He cannot help them, but he can point them in the right direction to see Xun Yu (Cao Cao's advisor).

Sima Yi ask Xun Yu to visit his father to give him some medicine. He understands that Xun Yun wants peace and harmony between Han loyalist and Cao Cao. Sima Yi says to bring peace to the Dong Cheng case, he needs to go tell his father not to confess to anything because any confession will expose the list of men on the edict of the belt. Then, many officials will lose their lives. Xun Yu brings Sima Yi to see his father and tells him to not confess to any sins. His father says he is most worried about his three sons particularly the third who who still have not married yet and squeezes Sima Yi's hand.

Sima Yi knows Yang Tai Wei has the edict and needs to destroy it, however, Yang Tai Wei needs the edict to support the king. Right at that time, he hears his father will be beheaded in 3 days. He immediately heads to Yang Tai Wei's house and let Yang Xui knows that his father was part of the edict. Sima Yi, then says, he has the edict now inferring that he stole the edict and runs off threatening them with the edict.

Cao Cao instantly was angered as the doctors words were the same as his political opposition. He imprisoned the doctor and asked for an aggressive investigation. The king receives a report that Dr. Hua Tuo is imprisoned. He is now firm on his decision to eliminate Minister Cao.

Cao Cao wants to break traditions and start gathering people based on talents. This was met with opposition that this will only attract inferior people who only have short term selfish interests. In the past, they only hire based on respect and prestige the person has gathered. Cao Cao asked the official what is the meaning of virtue (behavior conduct)? Virtue means to not let his soldiers to die in vain, to allow citizens to sleep knowing that they are safe, and not letting citizens starve.

He finds the talents they gathered are hypocritical. They are people who does nothing all day except speak. To identify new talents, Cao Cao instructs the officials to announce that those who wish to seek a position should attend the next Yue Dan Review and demonstrate themselves. This event is judged by Yang Xiu and Yang de, who are the sons of Sima Fang's best friend official.

Liu Zhen asked Yan Xiu to review his poetry and Yan Xiu doesn't even read it and starts reviewing because he has already read his work. He thinks his poetry's message is clear and written in a refreshing way. However, it's too intense/strong with parts that are not perfected. His poetry is 2nd class. First class qualities is like the poetry of Minister Cao and his son.(This is him sucking up to Minister Cao and announcing his will to be on their side) Their poetry brings traditions, strong, and can swallow the earth.

Next on stage is Sima Fu. He asked Yan Xiu's review on his response essay to the Shang Shu (Book of History - the time before Confucious). Yan Xiu refuses to review as he believes the Shang Shu contains a fake passage, and his response is useless as the passage is fake because last year, notable scholar, Zheng Xuan announced the passage titled You Xian You Yi De is fake. Sima Fu says that the passage was there for a long time, and Yang Xiu laughs that it can't possibly be that Zheng Xuan is wrong. He invites Sima Fu to come again when he has another work to show.

Sima Yi, angered by the 2nd insult from Yang Xiu and understands his brother's passive nature in not wanting to argue, steps up to defend his brother and ask whether virtuous and notable scholars do not have mistakes? Yang Xiu asked Sima Yi to explain. Sima Yi starts off saying Sima Qian and Zheng Xuan are great/virtuous but it's possible they can also make mistakes.

Sima Yi starts off saying Yang Xiu is not wrong. I do not think Sima Qian should not mix the topic of "A Virtuous Person has a Moral" with Yingao (a passage about Yi Yin's aid to the king of Shang Dynasty). Zheng Xuan says that the problems (lost/fake) with "Yingao" does not necessarily mean "Virtuous Person Has A Moral" passage is also a problem (lost/fake). This assumption is too careless. Yang Xiu ask him where did his reasoning come from.

Sima Yi continues and says that Sima Qian and Zheng Xuan are masters of virtues, but masters can make mistakes. "Virtuous man with a moral" says that fate is not consistent (uncertain), and rulers should always practice virtues/morals in order to protect the throne. Those who stop will lose their throne. This is Confuscious's Chun Qiao's passage principal/meaning/point and also the main message of Shang Shu.

Yang Xiu argues just because their points are similar, does not mean it is part of the original text. Just looking at the principles that are similar is not a good way to study either. He compliments Sima Yi's determination to learn, but learning about governing & politics needs a lot of lessons/knowledge. Although you cannot just use memory and have to be innovative, you shouldn't just follow any opinions either. Thank you for your advise. I believe in this chaotic world, many scripts were lost I am learning so that I can from these remaining scripts find the missing meanings and practice the Sheng Xian's studying approach to help the nation with strategies. It's not to have debates with each other and attack. This passage can advise the king and teach the commoners. Then it should be left in the books. How can you say it is useless work? The rights and wrongs of knowledge is not just about the grammar but more about the approach/attitude.

Minister Cao is ambushed but his army eliminated the assassins and captures the leader who is the King's concubine's father. Minister Cao instructs to bring the father into the palace to ask the concubine and the king what is going on. An official advises Cao Cao to not stir up too much trouble and harm the king. Let's not give the enemy, Yuan Shao, an advantage. Minister Cao purposely did this to subside internal political turmoil so he can focus on Yuan Shao.
